Hi everyone. Today, I have a pretty comprehensive beginner's guide to Coleto for you. So, we'll be going over this limited-edition "My First Coleto" box set that features limited edition refills. We will be talking about some common mistakes people make when they first use their Coleto. I'll be addressing a very frequently asked question, which is, "Can I use other custom multi refills inside my Coleto?" And I'll show you that the answer is yes, but and kind of teach you how to do that. So, why don't we just get started by talking about the Coleto?
This is a very basic, basic video in that it's, it's meant to be a video especially for people who are brand new to the Coleto, who maybe have heard of it but don't totally understand what it is. So, the Coleto is a custom multi-pen. Now, you will almost always see Coletos being sold as each component totally individually. So, what that means is you'd pick out your barrel, and it would be empty, and it would be completely independent from your colors and tip sizes that you'd pick out for your ink. And the idea is that you're customizing a very personal pen for yourself.
So, the most common problem we see with Coletos are people getting them for the first time. Now, this is not meant to make anyone feel bad. This is more like meant to say, "Hey, this is a common problem. I'm trying to teach you guys how to avoid it." So, when you are filling your Coleto, you want to be careful of two things. Now, one thing is, do you see these springs inside your Coleto? You want to make sure you are getting your refill down the center of those springs and not awkwardly bending them or pinching them. And when you're pulling your refill up, if it starts coming up, you know, high, and you can kind of feel it catching on here, you want to stop before you end up yanking this spring out. And the reason for that is we don't want this spring to get bent, or your Coleto won't work properly. So, that's why you want to be really careful to get your component inside the spring when you're filling it. And also, the second part of this is threading it properly. So, I see a lot of people who don't read their Coleto up at the top. And so, you see this little nubbin here, they basically have installed their Coleto so that it's not threaded inside the barrel. So, the difference would be this, which is not threaded versus this, where you've got your little notch behind the section in the barrel where it goes. That way, it's caught there. It's not going to pull out like you saw it was doing when I didn't have it threaded. So, I realized this feels very basic for some of you that I've been watching my videos a long time. But of course, for beginners, this is a really common question and a common issue. So, you, what you do is with the other components that you've picked out, you're going to just continue carefully inserting your inks into your barrels until you have them all. And then you'll be able to select your ink and start writing. And the way to get this pulled back up is to gently press a little part ways on a totally different color. So, you know, not putting it all the way down because then you're just going to end up with that stuck down again. It, but just a little bit will pop up the other one. Now, for some of this is a super intuitive, and we don't need an instructional video. And for others, this whole pen just feels so foreign that that we do need something like this. So, don't feel shy or embarrassed about posting any questions you have at this point below because I do want to make sure that we, you know, can, can help everybody that wants to use the Coleto, don't really know how to do it. We don't want it to feel like a "what in the world is this thing?" kind of pen.
So, so what Pilot has recently done as a limited edition is this, like, "Hey, we understand there are some people that are totally new to the Coleto. It's really weird to them that you are buying all these components separately." Until they came out with this limited edition box set product. And it's in nine different variants. I'll show them all. But what they've done is they've paired a Coleto barrel with four different inks in limited edition stoppers. Now, the cool thing about colloidal stoppers is that if you're careful, they are reusable. So, if you like these limited edition stoppers, you don't need to think of them as a one-time use thing. You can keep them when you're done with your ink and use them in your new refills. And I'll teach you how to do that too. So, the different ones that they've come out with are we've got this four-color dot pink. Now, all of these box sets are for color barrels. If you go look at the Coleto product on our site, you're gonna see you can pick three color barrels, four color, five color, even two color. And so, that's totally customizable to you. But in terms of these limited edition box sets, they put only the four color barrels inside them. So, I just want you to know what to expect, and, and just can help you understand that there is some choice here if you're buying the components individually. So, here you have this dot pink four color barrel, and you've got four transparent heart refills in black, red, clear, blue, and pink. And they are in point four millimeter. Now, this is a good time. Let me zoom in here. I think this is a good time to kind of show you the difference in tip size because this is another frequent mistake people make. People don't realize that the point three, point four, and point five are referring to the millimeter tip size. So, the larger the number, the larger the tip size. A lot of people have, for some reason, they think the opposite. And so, we've got quite a few people who get the point three millimeter and are like, "Oh my gosh, this pen is too thin for me. I don't like it." And really, if you're brand new to fine-tipped pens, I would not recommend starting with the point three. In fact, I'd probably recommend starting with the point five. I myself most often reach for the point four, but it really depends on what I'm using the pen for. The tinier your writing, the finer you can go in in your pen. And if you like to write a little larger or you like it to feel a little juicier, smoother, then you want to go larger in your tip size. Now, because I use good quality Japanese paper, which isn't that, like, wrist, like most of the paper in the U.S. is kind of like this recycled pulpy thin paper, which doesn't really, if it doesn't do pens justice unfortunately. And so, it's these, this like nicer, thicker paper that you're using that you'll appreciate the finer tip pens more in my opinion. Because people who say the point three feels scratchy, I feel like that's really inaccurate. I think it has more to do with your taste, the paper you're using, and what you're used to. I never think a point three feels scratchy because I write tiny, and I write on good paper. And so, I always feel that that point three is is juicy enough personally. But I do want it. What I'm trying to stress here is that it's a personal preference, and there is no right or wrong. It has to do with, you know, what you like. So, that's, that's what, what I mean by, if this is your first time to use a Coleto, I really personally would stay away from the point three and I'd steer you more toward a point five. And that's just really kind of the important part, I think, of what I'm trying to say about these tip sizes. But I've written for you the different colors that come in these beginner box sets in three different tip sizes, so that you can get an idea of how, how different they are. So, that way, if you're thinking, "What is the difference between 0.3 and 0.5?" you can kind of see it visually here, and, and maybe right away, you know which one you're drawn to. So, that's just a little tidbit about the ink sizes in the Hi-Tec C. So, we did go through that first variant, and we have eight more to go through. So, this one is a dot baby pink with some transparent hearts in black, red, pink, and orange. Again, all of the box sets come with point four tip size. This middle one, so this one is dot blue with black, red, clear, blue, and orange. So, this one is a dot baby pink with some transparent hearts in black, red, pink, and orange. Again, all of the box sets come with point four tip size. This middle one, so this one is dot blue with black, red, clear blue, and orange. This one is the transparent barrel with wing pastel wing refills, which are quite cool in black, red, clear blue, and pink. Why don't we transition into talking about how to get other types of custom multi inks inside your Coleto? The rest of this video really gets out of the beginner area, and it goes more into a little bit more advanced. You know, usually people who are already using Coleto ask this question. Maybe they started using one of my favorites, which is the sawdust a select, and they want to know, "Hey, can I get a straw so select ink inside my Coleto?" And of course, the answer is yes, and I'm gonna show you. So, let's say, okay, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna take this one here. This one's kind of an interesting done-up custom one in that these are all the same ink colors, but I just put a different, it's the clear blue ink, but just a different limited edition refill at the top because why not? I just felt like it. So, let me get a clean page. Make sure you can see right here. Yeah. So, basically, this is gonna involve cutting. So, if you want to do this, we're gonna need a pair of scissors. Please be aware that this is at your own risk. So, if you start cutting your refills, we're not gonna, you know, take them back if you cut too much or something. So, I really want you to be careful when you're doing this. This is totally a hack at your own risk. I'm not like, I'm not officially endorsing this hack. I'm just kidding. Okay. So, pretend that your, that this refill is all used up. We want to very carefully pull out the topper so that we don't break off this part. Cuz that's really important. That's how it's gonna hold on to your next refill. And you can see right away that the synopsis select refill is longer than the Coleto. Now, you're gonna find this with pretty much every, like if you wanted to hack the Slicci or the uni style fit. It is going to be the same length as a starter select. It's gonna be too long. So, we want to cut it. And so, what I do is I just very carefully cut it to the same length as the Collette Oh. In theory, you're empty Coleto Inc would be. And then I'm gonna pop like my Coleto topper on here. Remove this, you know, these things goop up on the bottom, and our fears with my writing if I don't get it cleaned off. Yeah. So, I'm just for anyone brand new to this. I'm just removing the the ink stopper that comes on the bottom of the pen to make sure your your inks not drying up. Okay. So, oops. See how I didn't thread it? So, it goes back here. So, let me show you. So, this is now the Sarasa select in blue green inside my Coleto. So, there you basically have the synopsis select path. And I even, and I even I'm using my limited edition hopper, which is cool. And so, let me just do that with one more, one more style. Let's say I want my wing here to be uni style fits. So, again, I carefully remove that so that I'm not breaking that on the end. I use my empty Coleto refill as a guide. Stick my Coleto topper on there. Stick this guy in here. And then now I have uni style fit in my Coleto. Let's go right now in this pin. I have I have a Coleto refill, a you nice outfit refill. Airness rasa select refill. And I could of course put a slinky one in there if I want. Now, for the Slicci, you have something to remove before you bother with the cutting and everything. All right. Yeah, I guess wouldn't necessarily have to remove it when I cut it, but just keep that in mind. Each one is a little bit different. But the whole idea is you couldn't do this hack unless you first kept some Coleto topper. So, please think about that. If you order a Coleto Beryl and Sarasa select refills, and you don't have any Coleto inserts at home, you're not going to be able to do that hack without them. So, just a couple more things I want to cover for the beginners. Most feet before we go right here. These are just 11 different colors that they have chosen to put in the various beginner box sets that I've talked about. Now, there are four more Coleto colors that I will, I will quickly swatch here just so you know what those colors look like. And in addition to that, you can also put a pencil unit inside your Coleto 0.3 or 0.5. And you just refill with regular lead of your choice. Any point three or point five, then you have will do really. And then you can also put an eraser in there, which you might want to do if you have a pencil unit in your Coleto. And the eraser unit is refillable with just little eraser sticks. So, I do want to before I move on from this pencil unit. I do get a frequently asked question of how to refill the lead, the in the in the pencil unit. And oh, and this is another one people always think they're getting broken ones because this is loose. But this is supposed to be like that. It has to be like that for the for the mechanism to work. So, don't panic thinking you've got a broken item when it's loose like this. It is supposed to be. So, to refill lead, so it should come with, you know, like one or two sticks in it. But to riffle its guess this one comes with two sticks, and you wouldn't want to put more than two sticks in it. But you just remove this whole top part. Put your lead refill in. You want to make sure you're using the right size. So, if you bought a point five refill with 0.5, and that goes for any mechanical pencil. And then stick your nose back on there. I will, I'm going to use this limited-edition Sailor Moon refill. If you go to our Coleto section on our site, you'll see some sailor moon' Coleto barrels that we still have, including this one. But just for beginners, I want you to know that that's also an option is that sometimes they come out with limited edition barrels. And so, they're kind of fun to grab and collect when you can. They always kind of come and go pretty fast. So, I am going to insert this now. One thing you'll notice is that the the lead lever kind of sticks out far, especially if you compare it to the traditional refills, which I'll show you. So, this is a traditional aqua blue, like it's not a limited edition one. And I'll insert this right here. And you'll just see the lead guy and the eraser guys the same. He sticks out in there, and that's what that's normal if that happens. So, let me watch these for other colors that you can kind of buy all apart. So, we'll do the aqua blue. I'm gonna actually swap down here. Let's see. You can you see this? The aqua blue is really a pretty blue. This is point four millimeter. And we'll do the brown next. This one is cherry pink. It's a really pretty color. I am going to before I swatch the pencil. I'm going to click this blue black, and I'm going to trade out the color. So, I can do that. There are really some nice rich colors in this series, but some colors that they're missing, you know, like the blue green. So you might really want to pursue that, that more advanced pen hack I showed you. And so now let's do the lead. We'll just do a pencil unit. This one is the point five millimeter again. You can get it in the point three or your eraser or unit. I mean, you kind of bring this here as you can see the different colors and then compare their, I think aqua blue and blue are really pretty similar. This blue, oh yeah, they're really some nice colors in this series. Some people really like the needle nose. Another, another quick thing to mention before I leave, it's not totally obvious to beginners that maybe you don't even want four different colors in your pen. Maybe you want three different sizes of a black or something like that. So really, I mean, the sky's the limit as far as you want to customize.
